The Move Over, America requires drivers to change lanes, when possible, to allow for police officers, firemen, paramedics, emergency vehicle workers and other first responders a safe working space.
The driver should attempt to give at least one lane of clearance space to the emergency workers. If there are two lanes moving East and the ambulance is pulled over on the right shoulder with its lights flashing, oncoming traffic should all merge into the left lane and slow down. The right lane, closest to the ambulance, should be free of cars if at all possible.
If it is not safe to move over, the vehicles should slow to an appropriate or reasonable speed. Emergency vehicles will be stopped with lights flashing and this includes law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances and other roadside emergency service vehicles.
